Asuncion

With a metro population of nearly 2 million people, Asuncion is not only the capital, but the largest city in Paraguay. Asuncion is one of the oldest cities in South America and the longest continually inhabited city in South America. 1/3 of Paraguay’s population lives in Asuncion, which makes Asuncion easily the most important economic and cultural city in Paraguay.

Less than 7% of the population of Asuncion professed to be Christian. The many social problems that have ensnared hundreds of thousands of the people of this city include child abandonment, child exploitation, drug trafficking, alcohol and drug abuse, etc. These social problems indicate a direct correlation to a population without Christ.

The Church of the Nazarene has struggled to take root and prosper in Paraguay… until now. Pastor Felix Vargas, a former member of a drug cartel himself, has a new vision for Paraguay. He wants to follow the model of his home church in Cali, Colombia where he first met Jesus. That model calls for churches focused on leadership development, evangelism, aggressive and intentional discipleship all pointed at church growth. Pastor Felix sees a day when 15 mega-churches of 1000 or more people are peppered throughout metro Asuncion.
