Short-Term Missionary Reflection: Jake Hagood, TNU Student
I was not a man’s man in high school. I could play sports, but I was not interested in them. I could build things, but I found my hands were of greater use behind the piano. God has gifted me with talents of music, song-writing and singing. These talents became burdens when they were not accepted in my home town. I decided to quit high school and get my GED. I left my burdens at home and traveled to Nashville. I entered Trevecca Nazarene University a very bitter and hurt young man because of my past. I soon discovered that I carried my burdens with me.
I decided I would be open to what the Lord had for me on this trip. Our mission team is a diverse one with many talents. I did not want to share my gifts with the people of Puerto Maldonado at first. My heart changed during the night of the soccer tournament. I saw many Peruvians accept Jesus as their savior. Our exhausted team continued to help others until the work was completed. It was in that moment that I realized I do not want to make life always about me. I want to make my life about serving others.
I am laying down my burdens and swallowing my pride. In my search for answers, I found truth and I am running back to God. I have found peace. I want to encourage others who believe their God-given gifts are burdens. I discovered in Peru why the Lord has placed these songs within me—it is to tell the world about His peace. I want to be known as the one who chases dreams and God’s extreme mission.
I have been so inspired by the witness of the 40/40’s. (Extreme long-term missionaries) They do not put themselves first. They are people of prayer and deep faith. I admire their trust in God, commitment to the mission and their self-sacrifice. They are always so positive and easy-going.
This trip has changed my life. I am so thankful for all the opportunities I have had to meet and pray for people.
This trip has been a pleasure for me.
