Latacunga is a plateau city of Ecuador. It sits at about 9,000 feet above sea level and sits closely to the Ecuadorian volcano Cotopaxi. It's proximity to the volcano has caused issues for the city in the past. Being close to seismic plates, earthquakes have destroyed the city four times between the years 1698 to 1798. The volcano has also erupted several times destroying the city as well.
It is a quant and quiet town with lots of interesting sights to see. There is the Quilatoa Loop (a road that rings around the backcountry of the Cotopaxi province), a popular Thursday morning market in the Parque Nacional Cotopaxi, and several historic sights.
